What is a bleed?

Bleed is a term used in the printing industry that refers to the portion of the product that will be trimmed off when it is cut to the final size. The purpose of a bleed is to ensure that a color, image, or design continues to the edge of the product, preventing any white lines from appearing due to potential shifting during the trimming process.

To incorporate a bleed, you must build your files to the full bleed dimension specified for each trim size. For example, if you are ordering postcards and there is printing extending to the edge, you must include a 1/4" bleed on all sides. This means your file size should be larger than the final trim size to accommodate the bleed area.
